The 80’s Fashion Trends That Will Make A FW18 Comeback

The era of the power-dresser, the 80’s saw padded shoulders, masculine tailoring and layering chequered outwear over soft, neutral roll-necks. With style staples that have proven to be truly timeless, dominating our catwalks time and time again, we predict which 80’s fashion trends will be resurfacing again for FW18…

Layering Checks

Mismatching checked fabrics may sound like a fashion disaster, but 80’s fashion proved that it worked. Take a look at the double-checked Brooke Shields, for example, who proudly wore a gingham checked blazer over a wide-checked, navy shirt in the 80’s. Complete with her effortlessly tousled blow-out, Brooke looked the epitome of an intellectual, sophisticated woman with a strong sense of style.

Pairing different heritage fabrics exudes confidence and class, and works well for the discerning gentleman or power-dressing lady. We’ll definitely see this look re-emerge this Fall. Accessorize with a chestnut tan or dark chocolate leather belt for an extra touch of class – the smooth leather with its attractive patina will perfectly complement any tweed or plaid blazer.

Boxy Blazers

Both 80’s men and women adored boxy suit blazers and pants paired with a simple crew neck tee. For the ladies, masculine tailoring was a power-dressing statement, subverting feminine traditions and embracing more ambiguous silhouettes. For the men, it was all about the oversized, slouchy look. The tailoring kept it smart and professional, but the baggier cut made it effortlessly stylish.

A big, boxy blazer was a much-loved statement in the 80’s that was showcased by the likes of Johnny Depp, Melanie Griffith in 1988’s Working Girl and singer David Bowie. Worn with either jeans or smart pants, it was a versatile 80’s fashion staple that we’re more than happy to see resurface on our catwalks next season.

Polka Dot

Fun, flirty and feminine, the 80’s polka dot favorite of British Royal Princess Diana is already making a comeback. Often offset with a huge waist belt or skinny jeans in the 80’s, polka dots were commonly worn by women on top, softening their look. Great paired with ruffles or a sleeker, sharper silhouette, the polka dot trend is incredibly versatile.

Polka dots have certainly prevailed for designers for 2018. With both high-fashion and high-street labels welcoming the polka dot trend to their stores in SS18, it’s interesting to see how the much-loved, timeless 80’s fashion trend has received a modern update. From figure-skimming swimsuits to chic, rolled-sleeved shirts, most designers have traded in 80’s volume for color and sleek silhouettes. Either way, we’ll be surprised if the polka dot trend doesn’t find its way back onto the FW18 catwalk.

Shirt & Suspenders

A must-have for the slick businessman, paired with a crisp shirt and tie, suspenders were the mark of a true gentleman back in the 80’s. Often seen worn with a sleek, pinstripe suit, suspenders were a firm favorite for gentleman in business – and we think they’re about to make a comeback for FW18.

Worn with a more casual polo and pants or a smarter roll-neck, suspenders are an incredibly versatile accessory that can make any gentleman appear effortlessly well-dressed. We’d definitely recommend investing in some this Fall – they’ll smarten up your work wardrobe for sure.
