On Monday, the Duke and Duchess attended the opening of a community cafe in Birkenhead. Meghan opted for a complete color clash of a vibrant purple dress with contrasting red heels and coat. This vivid ensemble was a rare foray into color for the Duchess who usually sticks to a neutral color palette. Nevertheless it is one of her most memorable outfits to date, exuding the joyfulness of the expectant mother. Meghan certainly inspires women to be bold, time to take this note for our wardrobes too…

Within her busy week of royal engagements, Meghan demonstrated the art of the neutral coat perfectly. Firstly, Meghan donned a sleek black dress with a classic camel coat for her visit to Smart Works, a charity which helps women to get jobs by cultivating their interview skills and providing professional clothes to boost their confidence. Setting the perfect example of sleek, professional dressing, the Duchess highlighted the transformative power of a good coat. Similarly, nearly a week later, Meghan made a visit to the headquarters of Mayhew – an animal welfare charity in the UK. Here, it was a softer look all round with a head-to-toe stone colour palette. The neutral coat once again proving what an essential versatile piece it is in any maternity wardrobe.

Just before Christmas, Meghan showed us all how to execute winter florals with a grey color palette and mix of materials. For this solo royal engagement she wore a Brock collection dress with the house’s signature traditional square neckline and ditsy floral pattern. A true classic which can be worn throughout the year, Meghan paired it with yet another neutral smart wool coat to adapt the look to the chill of an English December. Here, she aptly showed how to wear florals as a pregnant woman in the modern day – blossoming but in a sleek, professional colorway.

Occasion dressing can be one of the biggest challenges when pregnant and yet, the Duchess of Sussex offers a masterclass in how it is done with style and grace. Each time, Meghan opts for a simple silhouette with column dresses in a single block color. Recently, at a surprise appearance at the British Fashion Awards to present an award to the designer of her wedding dress Clare Waight Keller, she wore a gown which embodied this formula: an asymmetric floor-length black gown. This harked back to earlier in her pregnancy when she wore a similar gown to a formal dinner during the Duke and Duchess’ royal tour of Australia, this time in a pretty cornflower blue with added cape. To take inspiration, then, from Meghan’s maternity style find a dress which is simple in design but stunning in its effect, before adding a single piece of statement jewelry and natural makeup for an occasion look which will always make you feel empowered.

HAVE YOUR ROYAL MOMENT

Royal Blue

For her first royal Christmas at Sandringham, Meghan opted for a deep navy ensemble. On why she mostly wears more classic muted colors than the Duchess of Cambridge or the Queen, Meghan stated during an Instyle interview in 2015 that clothes are, in essence, a reflection of how you are feeling. Insisting that she feels most comfortable in darker colors, it is understandable that when she wants to feel her most powerful, the most like herself, she reaches for a piece which she knows will do just that. The same is the case for any maternity wardrobe. If you too feel most assured in a understated color palette then take a leaf from Meghan’s book and stay true to who you are. The Duchess also perfectly shows that to look your most chic, royal navy blue is always the answer.
