#1 – Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

For a summer read that’s as original as it is gripping, choose Never Let Me Go, by Japanese author Kazuo Ishiguro. A Nobel-Prize winning author, Ishiguro’s books are definitely at the top of our list of summer reads.

The novel follows the lives of a group of students growing up in a dark, skewed version of contemporary England. Narrated by Kathy, now older and reflecting back on her memories, Never Let Me Go paints a portrait of her childhood and the fate that has always awaited her and her closest friends. A story of friendship and love, this poignant novel has an incredibly hard-hitting twist that you may not see coming.

#2 – In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

If you prefer your summer reads to be grittier, try Truman Captote’s non-fiction novel In Cold Blood. So popular that it was made into a film, this crime novel follows the true story of the 1959 murders of the Herbet Clutter family in Kansas. When Capote first learned of the four murders, he traveled to Kansas to uncover the truth behind them. Accompanied by his dear friend and fellow author, Harper Lee, he compiled thousands of pages worth of notes.

Capote spent six years working on this non-fiction title. Gripping, gritty and very real, it will resonate well with readers of crime fiction, or non-fiction. Not for the faint hearted, but definitely an alternative summer read.

#3 – Persuasion by Jane Austen

This classic title from our summer reads edit is by Jane Austen, author of Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. Yet another wonderfully written book from Austen, the novel Persuasion features beautiful character portraits and exceptionally clever dialogue.

The plot concerns Anne Elliot, who was once convinced by her family not to marry the man she truly loved. A few years later, fate and circumstance means that Captain Wentworth is brought back into her life, with repercussions she never could have imagined. A novel where love and family relationships are pivotal, it’s an entrancing read that will have you hooked – and, as you may have guessed, it’s all about the art of persuasion.

Number four of our edit of summer reads follows Tess Durbeyfield, the eldest daughter to poor parents, who learns that she may be descended from great fortune. Exploring Tess’s relationships with two very contrasting men, she struggles against the barriers of the rural Victorian world in which she lives, navigating her respectability in a world that is watching her every move.

Famous for being scandalous and shocking when it was first published in 1891, Tess of the D’Urbervilles is a timeless classic that will be read and re-read for years to come. Pack and enjoy later, while you’re relaxing by the coast or sun-seeking on a sun-bed.
