Italian Leather Soft Briefcase

Your Guide

Due to the innate craftsmanship of our briefcases we offer a 25 year guarantee. With this, we are unique in our commitment to quality and the finest durable pieces. Each case is handmade from full grain, vegetable-tanned Italian leather by skilled artisans in the heart of Tuscany. Therefore, it is our responsibility to repair any manufacturing faults on zips, clasps, stitching or otherwise.

The pledge to provide this industry-leading warranty has been foundational to Maxwell-Scott from the very beginning. Our founder and CEO William Scott Forshaw has always been focused on providing the very best to his customer, searching tirelessly to source only the finest leather and skilled artisans. Consequently, our 25-year warranty is an honest reflection of our dedication to advocating craftsmanship and slow, sustainable fashion.

Please note that we do not cover any damage caused to an item by personal misuse or due to fair wear and tear over the natural life of your purchase. If this is the case, however, our repair team is happy to mend the item for a fee.

We only use full grain vegetable-tanned western cowhides. These are sourced from the Santa Croce sull’Arno region of Tuscany - a world-renowned area for producing high-quality leather that stands the test of time. Full grain leather means that it is made from the strongest part of the hide, furthest away from the flesh. It is considered the most desirable type of leather as the close grain pattern is both durable and attractive.

Our leather is then vegetable-tanned. As members of The Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium, we honour traditional craftsmanship. After many centuries, this process is still a way of life for many in Tuscany. In essence it is a natural process, with dyes extracted from bark extracts including chestnut, quebracho and mimosa trees, which results in a rich, warm finish. Importantly, no toxic chemicals are used which is environmentally friendly and allows the leather to develop a unique patina. Over time, this highly desirable sheen is cultivated through use and exposure with the patina a hallmark of the highest-quality leather.

Additionally, our full grain leather is available in three different finishes: Classico, Croco and Soft Grain.

Classico is our signature leather, ideal for the gentleman with traditional taste.

Croco means our mock croc finish. Here, our classic full grain leather is heat-embossed to reveal a faux crocodile print. It is a unique twist for the gentleman with individual style.

Soft Grain is our most modern option. This butter-soft leather has a matte finish which makes it perfect for the gentleman who desires a more relaxed look.

Tuscany is the traditional leather epicentre. As a result, our family-run factory is based here in the heart of Italy. This means that our skilled artisans possess a wealth of knowledge and experience. In fact Domenico, the head of the family, has been involved in the leather industry for nearly 75 five years. Such a commitment to his craft is reflected by those around him as the factory strives for the very best. Our 25 year warranty is a testament to this skill.
A leather briefcase is one of the most important work wardrobe investments that you will ever make. As a result, we design each briefcase with functionality in mind. Our collection includes a range of styles which can adapt to your specific needs. The Volterra laptop briefcase, for example, has a padded compartment with straps to secure a laptop whereas the Alanzo features external umbrella straps. One of our most versatile briefcases, though, is the Micheli backpack briefcase which boasts adjustable straps so that the briefcase can be worn on your back or by your side. The majority of our briefcases are also accompanied by a detachable, adjustable shoulder strap to easily support the weight of your bag.

This focus on practicality is evident through the evolution of the Paolo 3-section classic briefcase. It is the flagship product of our founder and CEO William. Since then, he has refined the design in order to fulfil the needs of the modern businessman, still maintaining the leather and the production methods. This demonstrates our primary philosophy: to always provide the most practical design that maintains a classic British aesthetic.

As part of our belief that the right briefcase can last you your entire career, it is essential to choose the perfect briefcase for you. There are four key elements to consider:

1. Size

Firstly, it is important to think about the amount that you need to transport to and from the office on a daily basis. This will allow you to choose between large briefcases like the 3-sectioned Tomacelli which can accommodate a 17” laptop, A4 files and an iPad/tablet or a slimmer design. The Lorenzo, for instance, has a single compartment for a slimline 13" laptop and thin notebook. It is simply a case of what will suit you best on a day after day.

2. Function

Part of the issue regarding the size of your ideal briefcase depends on the function that you require it to perform. If you need to carefully transport a laptop then, it is necessary to choose a briefcase with a protective padded section. If, however, you are a frequent flyer then the Varese with wheels may be more appropriate.

3. Style

The style that you choose should also depend on your environment. A formal workplace requires a traditionally smart briefcase like the classic Buroni attaché case, whilst in a more casual setting, a leather business satchel such as the Ravenna may be more suitable.

Likewise, the leather colour is crucial here. Dark chocolate brown and chestnut tan leathers perfectly complement navy suits whereas black matches grey and, of course, looks smart with a more traditional black suit.

4. Profession

For a specialised profession, a more specific case may be required. For example, the Basilio executive briefcase is ideal for an attorney when transporting documents. But, a medical practitioner may prefer the Donnini Large leather physician bag due to its gladstone design and ample space.

Maxwell-Scott was founded by William Scott Forshaw in 2002 as an antidote to the fast fashion culture. His focus was to create briefcases to last an entire career that combined Italian artistry with timeless British design.

William searched tirelessly for the right factory, finally settling on a family-run factory in Tuscany. Here, in Italy’s traditional leather industry, the Maxwell-Scott artisans now handcraft each briefcase. Thus, their workmanship is a result of the decades of knowledge passed down through families. In fact, each briefcase has a 25 year guarantee. This is both a testament to slow consumerism and follows William’s desire to create pieces which can be passed from generation to generation.

Over the years we have formed deep connections with our customers, continually striving to provide the best in terms of purchase and customer service. Ultimately, the primary aim at Maxwell-Scott is to serve the customer and uphold the heritage of Italian leather industries.
