York Cocoa House

Dear Chocolate Lover

Sophie from the Cocoa House in the heart of York has always been a self-proclaimed “devoted and inquisitive chocolate lover”. But her obsession with chocolate went further than just being unable to get through a single day without a treat; she loves making and sharing chocolate. In 2011, Sophie’s sweet obsession became a profession and she opened the Cocoa House with her business partner Michelle and a team of chocolate lovers in York.

Today, the York Cocoa House is part of York’s charm as the city of chocolate. Sophie’s Cocoa House is the ideal place for everyone with a sweet tooth for chocolate and pralines. From courses on how to make your own chocolates to a lovely little café with a menu of savoury and sweet delights and a shop where you can buy luxurious chocolates that were made on site, or by local chocolatiers, the Cocoa House is an homage to all things cocoa and offers everything the heart of a chocolate fan desires.

Our Offer

For our Easter special we decided to work together with the York Cocoa House. At Maxwell Scott Bags we are very fond of Sophie’s chocolate. The eye for detail, the responsibility for every single customer and the focus on quality is what differentiates small businesses like us and the York Cocoa House from bigger high-street retailers and makes us special.

From Good Friday to Easter Monday we want to treat our customers with a FREE selection of luxurious handmade chocolate Easter eggs by the York Cocoa House when you spend over £200. The Chocolate City

York was once known as the Chocolate city. Big chocolate factories like Terry’s, Rowntree’s, Cravens or Lazenby located in York and shaped the historic townscape. Thick chocolate dust covered the buildings and pavements and the smell of chocolate would lie in the air. For the families of the factory workers in York the chocolate factory was more than just a workplace. The chocolate industry guaranteed the families a regular income and was a source of support, education and health care.

Today the chocolate industry is still a big influencer in York and more and more small businesses, chocolatiers and confectioners, like the York Cocoa House, discover the ancient chocolate town. Sophie from the Cocoa House would love to tell the story that York has had in the chocolate industry. She says: “I would love us to be able to tell that story much more coherently from the growers themselves through to the chocolate bars that we make. And really reconnect that story with York’s history, and the role that York has had in the chocolate industry”.
