The Golden Globes 2018 | Fashion Blackout

One thing you’ll have noticed about the 75th annual Golden Globes is the sea of black dresses that dominated the red carpet this year. Eschewing bold, bright gowns in favor of monochrome designs, the women of Hollywood stood together in solidarity. Here’s our round-up of our favorite looks this year…

A Vision in Velvet

Amongst the array of generic Hollywood suits, Golden Globe winner Sterling K. Brown stands out from the crowd in a velvet Isaia tuxedo. Not only did he become the first black actor to win the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Drama, the 41-year-old looked exceptionally sharp while doing it. Offsetting a velvet blazer with a stylish silk lapel and pants of a similar hue, Sterling K. Brown was dressed impeccably for the event.

Brown’s look isn’t just reserved for the red carpet. You can emulate his style for your own social soirées, or even the office, by pairing a velvet blazer with dark chinos and a rich, Italian leather briefcase. We’d recommend The Paolo3 – the striking, night black leather will complement velvet tones handsomely and emphasize premium quality.

Nobody pulls off a floor-length Brandon Maxwell velvet number quite like Viola Davis. Favoring an exaggerated sweetheart neckline cut and figure-skimming design, the How To Get Away With Murder actress exuded class, status and sheer confidence. Accessorizing with a gorgeous silver, multi-row necklace, Davis dressed up the simple silhouette of her all-black gown with a touch of decadence.

For an every-day version of Davis’s red carpet look, try velvet wide-legged pants with a blazer or knitted sweater. Alternatively, pair a velvet, sweetheart neckline top with cropped pants and a blazer. Team with our Lucca bag in night black for a head-to-toe black, super classy look.

Masculine Tailoring

What better way to embrace the patriarchal power shift than to rock an androgynous look at the Golden Globes? Claire Foy, star of popular Netflix series The Crown, joined the all-black protest by donning a two-piece black suit, styled with slicked back hair and a pop of red lipstick. Although she lost the title of Best Actress to Elisabeth Moss, Foy looked every inch the power figure in masculine tailoring by Stella McCartney, which fans couldn’t get enough of.

To replicate Foy’s look for drinks in the city, choose a double-breasted blazer, wide-legged pants and dress it up with a pair of elegant earrings. Add that finishing touch of class with our statement Rosa Croco purse.

Wonder Woman lead, Gal Gadot, fused feminine and masculine shapes on the red carpet by layering a cropped tuxedo blazer over a silky sheath dress. Like Foy, Gadot opts for an element of sparkle with drop earrings, the perfect accessory to a Tom Ford, all-black outfit.

This sleek ensemble, albeit dressed down a little, would work perfectly for a key presentation or after work drinks. Change up the maxi dress for a tailored midi with a blazer, showing you mean business as you exude a refined, polished look at the boardroom or bar. Style with The Fiorella, our luxury work tote bag, for a practical yet stylish finish.

A Touch of Silk and Satin

Stranger Things actor, David Harbour, wore a truly all-black tuxedo, with a satin-sheen finish to the lapels and waistcoat. Offsetting the sheen with a velvet bow tie, Harbour brought his own power-dressing expertise and undeniable class to the red carpet. Harbour earned his first Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actor in a TV series. Unfortunately, he left the awards ceremony empty handed – we still think his sleek, executive style is commendable though.

The simple yet stylish SantinoS men’s clutch is the perfect accessory for this look: we love the look of premium leather against the sheen of satin.

Australian-born Margot Robbie battled the flu to join her fellow actresses in all black at the Golden Globes awards this year. Wearing a custom satin Gucci gown, decadently finished with embellishments and a crystal bow, the I-Tonya star looked sleek, chic and polished. The satin material combined with the powerful padded shoulders and plunging neckline of Robbie’s dress created a gorgeous silhouette, playing with her proportions.

Our Mirabella L purse tidy in Croco would make a gorgeous, stylish addition to a satin-based outfit. Wear as a clutch for a striking, unique effect and a distinctly feminine touch.

A Floral Affair

Thor star Chris Hemsworth proves that black-tie doesn’t have to be boring with his sans tie, black Etro paisley suit. A difficult look to pull off, Hemsworth wears it with confidence, even daring to add a pair of black velvet shoes into the mix. This outfit may be a tricky one to incorporate into your office wardrobe, but a paisley tie or a subtle floral flock pattern shirt would instantly add dimension to your workwear without verging on the overly flamboyant. If, like Hemsworth, you wear it with confidence, it’s bound to receive many compliments.

Keep it sharp with our Dimaro zipped leather conference folder – a handsome, practical accessory for your boardroom look.

Catherine Zeta-Jones was a vision in a striking, full-length, floral-flock Zuhair Murhad gown, featuring semi-sheer material and a plunging neckline. The lace plumetis and embroidered detail ensured that her dress turned heads on the red carpet, keeping it feminine and elegant with a unique edge. A pop of colour was added to the outfit with green statement earrings, which added dimension to the all-black look.

Take inspiration from Catherine Zeta-Jones’ Golden Globes outfit with a floral flocked, semi-sheer blouse layered over an opaque cami top. Team with an oversized blazer for a more casual look, pairing with cropped pants and comfy flats. Pair with our LilianaS leather bowling bag and you’re good to go.
