Spring Espresso makes the very best cup of coffee in the city, great cakes and has a really relaxed atmosphere.

York Art Gallery always has new interesting exhibitions on. Sitting next to the historic King’s Manor, in the shadow of the Minister, it really is at the center of the city. I love a trip here for an hour or two of quiet inspiration.

On a warm summer’s day there is nowhere better than the Museum Gardens which is also at the heart of the city near the Minster. There’s always a ice-cream kiosk too which is the perfect way to spend an hour or so soaking up the sun and breathing in the city.

My first choice would be Rustique on Castlegate. Not only is it a very beautiful setting, it also serves the very best french-inspired cuisine in the city. I always order the steak – one of the best steaks in York in my opinion.

After dinner drinks definitely calls for a trip to Spark:York. This is such an incredible enterprise where many small independent businesses are built together in shipping containers surrounding a large communal space. It always has such an amazing atmosphere and, as such, it is a wonderful place to spend an evening together.

One of the most iconic parts of York are the medieval Bar Walls. They are so special to the city, having been built in the 13th century from magnesian limestone. Now, they mean that you can walk around almost all of the city center, hopping on and off depending on how long you have to spend enjoying the city.

Whilst you are on your Sunday stroll around the city you will also see one of the very best views of the city. On the Bar Walls, opposite The Grand Hotel, you are able to look back onto the Minster. This will always be my favorite view of the city, showing how this historic city has evolved over time.

My favorite place for brunch is Robinsons, a little cafe on Bishopthorpe Road. Bishopthorpe Road is itself the perfect place to visit when in the city as a stretch of independent shops with the most addictive atmosphere. In fact it won Britain’s best high street in 2015. Robinsons then opened in April 2016 under the leadership of Will Pearce and Rebecca Toppin. It celebrates local produce, championing a short field-to-fork journey. I would recommend the creamy truffle mushrooms with poached eggs on toasted sourdough.
