Greenwich Village : 30 West 8th Street

Stumptown is a place where coffee becomes a science and an art form. From directly sourcing the very best beans in the most remote places to the particular and highly-considered roasting process, the coffee at Strumptown is rooted in passion. Their Greenwich location, which opened in the spring of 2013 in a former book shop with its own distinguished heritage, is now one of their 4 NYC homes. Typically, their blends are a medium roast whereas their single origin coffees are on the lighter end of the spectrum. For your daily dose, then, Strumptown is the place to go with their cappuccino particularly good. In fact, the brew bar in general offers options to please any palate. Any coffee, though, should certainly be accompanied by a pastry, scintillating chat or a wonderful read.

125 North 6th Street, Brooklyn

Open from 6:30am – 7pm daily, the Toby’s Estate Cafe And Roastery in Brooklyn (one of their many New York locations) is a haven. This is because Toby’s Estate aims to source the very highest quality coffee, with Green Coffee Buyer Jonathan Withers travelling to multiple coffee growing regions for three months out of the year. This produces a diverse, seasonal and unique experience. Moreover, this flagship store acts as a brew school for those searching for a little instruction with their morning cup and houses the production team. Consequently, they roast all of the coffee for the Toby’s Estate cafes and wholesale customers on this premises. A warm and heartfelt place then, the Toby’s Estate store is finished with shelves of vintage and reclaimed Aussie nostalgia to pay homage to Toby’s Australian origins.

Culture Espresso is a particularly stylish coffee bar, near Bryant Park, known for its flat white and chocolate chip cookies. It is a space of exploration, from the rotating exhibit of art and photography by local and international artists to Culture’s ethos to constantly sample coffees from different farmers and roasters. This in turn means a carefully curated menu. A single roasters is highlighted at a time which allows Culture and the roaster to represent the efforts of the industry’s finest, together. Consequently, this little oasis in the chaos of New York is the place to visit when you just fancy feeling at home albeit with the finest coffee to hand.

Black Fox

70 Pine Street

In the heart of the Financial District, Black Fox opened its doors in 2016. Since then, it has made a name for itself serving a diverse bean selection on a daily basis and good food. Similarly to our focus at Maxwell-Scott on quality and craftsmanship, Black Fox prides itself on its commitment to the finest coffee brewed by an innovative and experienced team. In fact, last year, team member Brittney Bell was featured in Refinery29 for creating the perfect fall drink- a Vegan Buttercup Latte from a shot of espresso, housemade butterscotch and oat milk. Black Fox was founded through a collaboration between marketing and media entrepreneurs Daniel Murphy and Gary Hardwick and Melbourne coffee veteran Kris Wood. It stands for three core values: quality (in terms of beans, tools and experience), customer experience (rooted in the community feel of a European espresso bar) and consistency. Therefore, if you are in the area, Black Fox is a must for a moment’s pause with a magazine.

The perfect mid-afternoon pick me up: espresso to go.

18 Grattan Street, Brooklyn

Sey Coffee was started in a loft. After all, it is the physical manifestation along the border of Bushwick and Williamsburg of Lofted Coffee, a cult classic created by entrepreneurial duo Tobin Polk and Lance Schnorenberg. In this light, bright, Nordic-style space, they serve beautiful light roasts to fellow coffee enthusiasts alongside a glass of sparkling water. If you never want your Sey experience to end, they also produce a range of high-quality coffees that are available on a subscription service. This airy space which works with the natural elements (wood, concrete, plants and light) is an absolute joy – as is their coffee.

Birch Coffee

The Birch Coffee Flatiron location is a must-visit for anyone who likes to read with their coffee. Here, you can sit amongst an extensive lending library whilst enjoying a brew, be that one of Birch’s bright light roasts or chocolatey dark beans. The general philosophy behind Birch is soothing. The team aims to give back and service the community by caring for people first and coffee a very close second. It is hardly surprising then, that Birch has so many regulars. Every cup of Birch Coffee is the product of small-batch, manual roasting in Long Island City. As such, the passion of founders Jeremy and Paul is evident. This is reinforced by the fact that the duo even offer a consulting service for entrepreneurs with the same dream of opening a brick-and-mortar coffee shop. Birch coffee is meant to be the “easiest part of your day” and, with the team’s commitment to people and sublime coffee, it surely will be.
