Is there any better stage to declare your undying love for your beloved other than at one of America’s most prestigious award ceremonies? Highly acclaimed director, Glenn Weiss, embraced his applause last night for winning the Outstanding Directing award in a rather extravagant but wonderful manner. He won the award due to his incredible work for a Variety Special for The Oscars and despite his excitement, it was evident that he had other things on his mind as he walked to the stage to collect his Emmy.
In a touching tribute to his mother who died just two weeks ago, Weiss called his girlfriend up to the stage, got down on one knee and proposed to her with his mother’s ring. The surprised crowd erupted into a congratulatory cheer. Benedict Cumberbatch, in particular, seemed to be very thrilled.
At the golden age of 96, national treasure Betty White delivered a moving speech after receiving a special Emmy award for her career, spanning over eighty years in the industry. Before she could acknowledge the crowd, however, the audience welcomed her with a rousing standing ovation lasting minutes. An accolade to her sparkling and long-lasting work portfolio, White received her ninth Emmy award last night – an incredibly impressive feat. Her speech declared gratitude for her longevity in the business and displayed her signature humorous side. “Little did I dream then, that I would be here and it’s incredible that I’m still in this business and that you are still putting up with me. I am thanking you. It’s incredible that you can stay in a career this long and still have people put up with you. I wish they did that at home.”
It was more apparent than ever at this year’s Emmy awards that the major online streaming networks are taking over from traditional television. Amazon’s favourite comedy ‘The Marvellous Mrs Maisal’ took home an impressive five awards last night. For a show that has only recently debuted, the cast were delighted to have won Outstanding Comedy Series, Supporting Actress In A Comedy, Leading Actress In A Comedy, Writing In A Drama Series, and Directing In A Comedy Series.
Hollywood’s evergreen star couple Biel and Timberlake returned to the limelight last night with their appearance at the awards ceremony. With Justin joking on Twitter that they had managed to get a nanny for the evening, it seemed that the talented duo were excited to be off-duty from their parenting roles for the occasion. The majestic pair stunned on the blue carpet in their perfectly matching evening attire. Jessica wore a couture floor-length gown from Ralph & Russo’s AW18 collection and platinum jewellery by Harry Winston whilst Justin opted for a classic black tuxedo by Tom Ford.
Biel received her first Emmy nomination this year in the Outstanding Leading Actress In A Limited Series Or Movie category for her role in Sinner. She is also the executive producer of the USA network’s thriller drama series – something Timberlake is very proud of. Last night on the blue carpet, he told reporters, “I was there too and saw her option this and develop it from scratch and I saw how much she put into it. I’m just so proud to be here and see this happen for her.”
