Jackie O and The Comeback of 60’s Fashion | Milan Fashion Week 2018

New York Fashion Week has been and gone, but Milan Fashion Week has only just begun. Perhaps not coincidentally aligned with President’s Day, First Lady Jackie Onassis Kennedy’s signature sixties style has made a comeback on the Italian catwalk, with Jeremy Scott of Moschino at the helm. Here’s our round-up of all the Jackie O inspired looks by Moschino on Milan’s runway…

STATEMENT SHADES

1970 – Oversized Sunglasses

Jackie O was big on statement shades. Oversized sunglasses added an effortlessly chic touch to every outfit she wore, soon becoming her style staple. Whether she was wearing a tailored suit jacket with a matching skirt, or more casual attire with a soft silhouette, Jackie was seldom seen without a pair of sunglasses that would turn heads. Jeremy Scott of Moschino certainly paid homage to this on the runway, experimenting with a multitude of different styles, shapes and colors of his stand-out sunglasses.

It’s unsurprising that Jeremy Scott chose to model Moschino’s Fall 2018 on 60’s style icon, Jackie Onassis Kennedy: he loves themes and style icons. Although Jackie’s signature oversized, tortoiseshell shades didn’t make the cut, Scott chose to embrace large, statement sunglasses with bold, colorful frames, in a nod to Jackie’s penchant for statement eyewear. Ranging in styles from round to rectangular, the glasses were styled with outfits of the same hue: hot pink frames against a neon pink bag and strawberry-pink glasses with a pale pink skirt suit.

BOLD IS BEAUTIFUL

1962 – The Chanel Suit

The iconic wool boucle Chanel suit that Jackie Kennedy wore back in 1963 was double-breasted and strawberry pink, alluding to the First Lady’s bolder tastes. With a navy-trim collar, Jackie kept it classy with a unique edge, experimenting with different hues, side by side. Unafraid to make a statement, this standout outfit has become one of her most referenced outfits of all time.

On the runway, Moschino’s designs emulate Jackie O’s bold and beautiful skirt suits, with vibrant color palettes to boot. We see a striking ensemble in a unique mint hue, from heels to gloves, topped off with Jackie’s signature blow out. With a hint of Moschino’s signature edge, we see the skirt suit revamped with zipper pulls, and patent leather trims.

Dressed in head-to-toe tangerine, Kaia Gerber – daughter of Cindy Crawford – steps out with confidence, exuding chic 60’s style. Rocking the pillbox hat and pointed, patent heels, Kaia is every inch the modern Moschino Jackie Kennedy.

1962 – White Formal Gloves

Long or short, one of Jackie’s most defining trends was her gloves. From kid gloves to long, formal gloves, Jackie set the precedent on how, and when, this particular accessory should be worn. Often pairing them with pearls and her signature, pillbox hat, Jackie’s overall look resonated with the public as the epitome of sophistication and class.

Scott imitates Jackie’s classic gloves but with a twist – the once white, formal long gloves that we’ve seen Jackie in from one regal soiree to the next have been replaced with black, patent leather, sealed with Moschino’s very own style stamp. Yet coordination across the ensemble remains key. With Jackie often matching her gloves to details on her suits or dresses, the overall look created was truly classy and well put-together. Moschino’s ready-to-wear Fall 2018 collection borrows inspiration from this, coupling black patent gloves with matching collars and mini belts in shiny fabric. Jeremy Scott is careful not to overlook every fine detail of Jackie’s iconic fashion moments: his collection is chic, sophisticated and a true testament to Jackie’s impeccable styling.
